What’s Your Gene Pool Like? A really strong fat man

I just found a neat tool online that will tell you on average, how long your family lives. Based on genealogical archives the database automatically calculates the average life expectancy of your family compared to all others and then graphs it over a 30 year time frame.

Over the last 30 years my family has about a 10 year longer lifespan than average.

I guess that is comforting. But then I remembered a story a friend of mine told. A friend of his was hitting middle age and decided he wanted to create a 100 year plan. He wanted to live 100 year – and enjoy it. So he went to his doctor to help him develop this 100 year plan. They consulted, ran tests and then evaluated.

The doctor said all of your test came back perfect. Your cholesterol is great. Blood pressure is great. Triglycerides are normal…. And your obese.

What?

The man protested, but I workout ever day. I can bench press twice my weight. Doesn’t that make a difference?

The doctor then went to his whiteboard and wrote "Really Strong – FAT MAN"

The point, there is more to health than just strength, or being skinny, etc. health and living well is much more than that. And if we want to not only live a long time, but really enjoy it we need to be healthy, not just strong, or good in a health measure or two. A real 100 year plan will not just rely on the genes, but will integrate exercise, proper eating, sleep, stress reduction – the whole gamut. When we focus on the whole, not just one piece, then we can have a real 100 year plan that we will want to be around for.

So Be Healthy – Enjoy Life

I love that story. Yet another reason why we like Bob from the Incredibles. I bought Matt a Bob figurine that first Christmas after the movie came out – probably the first Disney character that he related to. :-) We still chuckle over it.

I so relate to Bob Incredible! I remember back in the good old days when I
used to take on the evil forces in the universe and stop their sinister
plans to take over the earth. Those were the days. /sigh.

I guess I'll just have to move on:)

I can relate to Bob and his desired to return to some of his former glory.
There is a lot to learn from Bob. He found his motivation and that allowed
him to stay focused. Of course getting fired so you have the time to work
out probably helped in the short term scheme of things, but the point is he
found purpose.

There is an alternate beginning to The Incredibles. This is before all the
kids have come and before Bob has lost all his zest for life. He has put on
a little weight for sure, but not quite as bad as when he had given up like
we see him in the movie.

I'm not sure how to give someone purpose. But without it – being healthy is
not really possible.

This makes so much sense. And it is something that I come across alot with my family. Or even just ourselves. We tend to brag up our positives of strength and exercise and disregard our nutrition or weight. It is a full picture program. Or vice-versa. That is very common too.

Really that is all we should focus on. Just be healthy. Those that focus on
just one area often get frustrated when they do not see the progress fast
enough, or they adopt a diet regime that is not conducive to overall health.
I'm thinking of the Atkins diet right now.

It is true that the Atkins diet will help you lose weight – but it can do so
at the expense of cholesterol, triglycerides and blood pressure
measurements. So no doubt there are people who's weight is so out of
control that it might be a good idea to do something extreme because
remaining where they are at is so dangerous. But in my experience any short
term gain that may be achieved will be done at a great sacrifice in the long
term.

Thanks for the comments.

That is an interesting post. It is true that the average life of man has considerably increased over the recent years. My grandparents are healthy in their 80's – the age that their parents have not seen. I think the recent medical technology development and the human awareness are the main reasons behind this.
