And this bowl was juuuust right.
One of the main reasons I think that we gain weight and then struggle with weight loss are the out of control portion sizes.
I’m not the only one that think that for sure. Body for Life preaches it all of the time. Half of enjoying life is learning to control our portions. Then we can enjoy all the variety of foods that are attractive to us, without any of the guilt. One of the hard things about controlling portions is the need to eat more frequently. If you eat just a small bowl of something, and then skip several more small meals it becomes very temptation to eat a larger portion once you get down to eating.
There are two problems with this. First, one large meal does not settle as well in the stomach as does several smaller ones. Meaning that your body is going to be far more likely to store the extra food as fat instead of just consuming what it needs to energy at the moment. The second reason is that one portion tends to be much larger than several smaller ones. I find that as soon as I break out the big plate I like to see it full. As much as like fancy meals – it drives me nuts to see a chef bring out a plate with 2/3 of it empty space. When it comes to eating meals I like my plate full.
Now, maybe that is not a problem for others, but as soon as I break out the big plate, and I missed some of my small meals, that is when I get in to real trouble because I can really pack it on the plate. And since I’m hungry, and can “justify” eating a “little” more I end up eating probably 2x the amount I would have on a series of smaller plates through out the day. Say good by to weight loss.
Bottom line for me, if I will just get out the 8 inch diner plate, instead of the 12 incher, I will eat a very comfortable amount of the foods that I love and still lose weight. Like Goldilocks said that bowl was juuust right!
Here is a great article on the subject with some ideas on how to better estimate portions to help with weight loss.

I think that for the children this is especially important. We grow-up all too often with the idea that we have to clean our plate. And then we give kids these huge plates and act offended if they do not eat all of the food on it.
What a disservice to the children who then grow up with this very unhealthy relationship with food.
just wanted to say, yeah! I love Body For Life!! It taught me so much about portion and foods and workout – I still use it alot with ISAGENIX
There are a number of great programs out there. One of the challenges we
have it sorting through all the information, disinformation and
misinformation to finally get down to the really good stuff. This is one I
think.
But having tried most of their products I still love Isagenix. I feel fuller
longer and I like the taste better.
Thanks for all the comments
You have made a great point, especially at the end. I have always known that eating less foor more frequently is much more healthy than big meals. But I had not thought about the plate issue. I started using small plates for eating and found that I felt just as satisfied after eating the food that fit in a small plate as I did after eating the food that I had piled onto a large plate. In fect, I felt better, more energized, and more positive after eating the small portion. And I know that it does help with weight loss because it worked for me.

It is really a good article and i enjoyed reading the information about the weight loss and it is very useful to me as I was a bit overweight person. I used to eat in big plates and I always like to see it full. After reading this article I will start eating in small plates and reduce my weight by eating less food.

This is so true.
We live in a super size society!
We are Americans that have the super size sodas and the big portions!
If we would just think about it, slow down, and eat slow we all would be healthier, especially our children!
